Nigerian Singer Portable to Face Six-Count Charge for Unruly Conduct and Incitement Against Police Officers

The Ogun State Police Command has given a 72-hour ultimatum to popular Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, better known as Portable, to turn himself in to the nearest police station or face arrest by Friday. According to the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, Portable’s father has pleaded with the police to give his son time to report to the station, promising to bring him himself. The ultimatum follows the circulation of two viral videos showing the artiste cursing some police officers in Ogun state. In one of the videos, Portable claimed that the police had been brought to his bar by an internet fraudster to arrest him and his staff members for no reason.

However, Oyeyemi explained that the police were attempting to arrest Portable following an alleged assault of a young studio owner and a petition against him. Oyeyemi said that five invitations were sent to Portable, but he did not honour any of them. Another invitation was sent through Portable’s father, but he still did not appear at the police station. According to Oyeyemi, the police had no intention of causing a breakdown of law and order, and the arrest of Portable was scheduled for Tuesday. However, Portable responded with a series of videos, in which he said all sorts of things. His father has been begging on his behalf, but the police have made it clear that if Portable does not turn himself in before Friday, he will be arrested.

It is worth noting that this is not Portable’s first encounter with the police. In 2022, his father had accompanied him to the Police Headquarters at Eleweran, Abeokuta, after the singer refused to honor police invitation over alleged assault of a disc jockey in the Sango area of the state. The current situation, however, appears to be more serious, and the police are urging Portable to cooperate and turn himself in to avoid further consequences.
