Federal Government Announces Work-Free Day on May 29, 2023, to Celebrate Presidential Inauguration

In a recent announcement, the Federal Government of Nigeria declared Monday, May 29, 2023, as a holiday for all workers in the nation. This important decree was made as part of the celebration to commemorate the swearing-in of the president-elect, Bola Tinubu on May 29 also.

Rauf Aregbesola, the Minister of Interior, relayed this crucial information through an official statement issued on Friday by Shuaib Belgore, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior. The Minister used this occasion as a moment to not only announce the work-free day but also to inspire the citizens of the country to steadfastly support and nurture the democratic system, with a specific focus on adhering to the rule of law.

In the statement, the Minister of Interior extensively praised the citizens of the nation, highlighting their faith in the democratic process. This sentiment was clearly seen in the recently concluded nationwide election that led to the emergence of the incoming President and his Deputy. He further extended his commendation to the successful conduction of elections throughout the nation.

Furthermore, Aregbesola pointed out that democracy is a work in progress and that it continuously evolves to better serve its purpose of driving good governance and improving the welfare of the citizens. This, he stated, could be achieved through adherence to the rule of law, bolstering democratic institutions, promoting a free and responsible press, and expanding the horizons of freedom for everyone in the country.

Additionally, he appealed to Nigerians to persistently promote the values of peaceful coexistence and neighborly love, citing that the fruits of democracy can only be enjoyed in a peaceful atmosphere. He emphasized that it’s through this peace that the nation can truly leverage the dividends of democracy.

The Minister of Interior further used this opportunity to laud the collective efforts of Nigerians in sustaining an uninterrupted civilian rule and successful transitions of power since 1999. He then used this opportunity to appeal to the citizenry to extend their support and cooperation to the forthcoming administration. Aregbesola argued that the boundless energy of the people is the nation’s greatest asset and, if channeled positively, would propel the nation to unimaginable heights.

Lastly, the Minister urged Nigerians to refrain from engaging in violent acts and any behavior that could potentially disrupt peaceful coexistence. He assured the people that the future holds promise, and with a concerted effort from everyone, the nation will experience unprecedented growth and progress in all aspects of human development.
