Balogun Market: Fire Guts Five-Storey Building in Balogun Market Again

In the early hours of Tuesday, tragedy struck once again in Lagos Island, Nigeria, as a raging fire gutted a section of a five-storey building in the popular Balogun Market, destroying properties worth millions of naira in the process.

The cause of the inferno is yet to be ascertained, but thankfully, no casualties were recorded. Panic has since enveloped the area as balls of fire billowed and smoke filled the sky.

According to eyewitness reports, the inferno started from 32 Balogun Plaza at about 8 am, where ladies’ shoe dealers occupy. The fire quickly spread to other parts of the building, consuming everything in its path.

The state emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Nigeria Police, and several other security agencies, have arrived and cordoned off the area for effective rescue operations.

Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, when contacted, stated that the situation had been brought under control as at 10.30 am. Adeseye confirmed that the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service was currently attending to the fire outbreak at the famous Balogun Market, which involved the topmost floor of a five-storey building.

She assured the public that the fire was under control, and mitigation efforts were being made to limit its spread. This swift response from emergency responders is commendable, and it goes to show the importance of prompt and efficient emergency services.

The Balogun Market is one of the largest markets in Lagos and is known for its bustling commercial activities. Traders and shop owners in the market have been left devastated by the fire, as they have lost their livelihoods and all their possessions.

This incident serves as a reminder of the need for proper fire safety measures in public buildings and marketplaces. The Lagos State Government should take this as a wake-up call to ensure that all public buildings in the state comply with fire safety regulations and have adequate fire prevention measures in place.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the affected traders and shop owners. We hope they can recover from this tragedy and rebuild their lives.
