Presidential Election: Nigeria Should Proudly Celebrate the 2023 Election Despite Setbacks - UK Envoy

The outgoing British High Commissioner in Nigeria, Catriona Laing, recently commented on the February 25th Presidential and National Assembly election, conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Despite the litigation surrounding the election, Laing praised the process as a positive step towards democratic governance in the country.

Laing made these comments during a courtesy visit to the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, in Abuja. The British envoy expressed her admiration for Nigerian culture and politics, saying that she had made many friends during her time in the country. She also acknowledged the setbacks of the election but overall remained optimistic about Nigeria’s democratic journey.

Laing recognized Nigeria as the largest democracy in Africa and praised the country’s progress towards participatory democracy since 1999. She also noted the fascinating nature of the election, which saw the country moving towards a three-party system or even four. She encouraged Nigerians to realize the value of their votes and participate in the democratic process.

In addition to the presidential election, Laing praised Nigerians for their resilience in times of difficulty, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic and the increased insecurity in the country. She expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future and thanked the President of the Senate for his support during her tenure.

In response, Lawan commended Laing for her positive disposition towards Nigeria and asked for her help in strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Britain. He acknowledged the long-standing diplomatic relations between the two countries and the role of high-rated diplomats like Laing in fostering stronger ties.

Overall, Laing’s comments on the February 25th election and Nigeria’s democratic journey serve as a positive reflection of the country’s progress towards participatory democracy. Her acknowledgement of Nigerian culture and resilience also highlights the importance of recognizing and valuing the country’s diversity and strength in the face of challenges.
