About 30% Nigerians suffer mental disorder – Report

The permanent Secretary of ministry of health, Abdulaziz Abdullahi says about 20 to 30 per cent Nigerians suffer from mental illness at the Mental Health Action Committee and Stakeholders’ Workshop in Abuja on Monday.



He said, “There are many different mental disorders, with different presentations. They are generally characterized by a combination of abnormal thoughts, perceptions, emotions, behavior and relationships with others.

“Mental disorders include: Depression, bipolar affective disorder, schizophrenia and other psychoses, dementia, intellectual disabilities and developmental disorders including autism.

however, he decried on the neglect of Mental health sector,  also expressed the need to create awareness to the masses on Mental health issues.

The Director of Public Health, Dr Evelyn Ngige,  Said it is needful to rethink in our daily general attitudes to mental health and questions our current maintenance of the status quo.”

Ngige, encourage Nigerians to do the needful by avoiding suicide and other related abnormal,  adding how dangerous mental illness can be awful.

She urge the federal government to support them with funds to achieve its goal in mitigating the high statistics of mental disorder in Nigeria.
