National Elections Commission Confirms Over 2.4 Million Liberians Registered for the 2023 Presidential and Legislative Elections

The National Elections Commission (NEC) of Liberia has declared that a total of 2,471,617 Liberians are all set to make their voices heard in the upcoming Presidential and Legislative elections on October 10, 2023. This landmark announcement was made by NEC chairperson, Madam Davidetta Browne-Lansanah, on Monday, 17th July 2023, following the successful culmination of the extensive exhibition, deduplication, and adjudication phases associated with the 2023 Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) provisional registration roll.

Delving into the demographic breakdown of the registered voters, Madam Browne-Lansanah unveiled that 1,237,257 of the total registrants are females, while the male electorate accounts for 1,234,360 individuals. These figures, which were declared at the National Elections Commission headquarters, highlight the balanced gender representation set to impact the electoral outcomes.

The path to these finalized figures is reflective of the transparent and meticulous efforts of the NEC. Between 12 and 17 June 2023, the commission orchestrated an elaborate exhibition of the provisional registration roll, a key step in the electoral process. This roll was a result of the voter registration exercise conducted from March 20 to May 11, 2023.

Prior to the exhibition phase, the NEC had reported a preliminary figure of 2,498,904 registrants. This early estimate, however, was refined in the subsequent steps of deduplication and adjudication. The NEC identified 27,192 duplicate records and flagged 529 suspected underage registrants, thereby reducing the total active registrant count to 2,471,183.

Madam Browne-Lansanah provided further insight, explaining that the exhibition process encompassed both active registrants and suspected underage registrants. This rigorous approach ensured the highest degree of accuracy and transparency.

In the aftermath of the exhibition process, and ahead of the final announcement, the NEC conducted a demonstration of the exhibition results on July 13, 2023. This demonstration was presented to the National Steering Committee on Elections (NSCE), thereby maintaining the collaborative spirit that has underscored the process from the start.

During this demonstration, the NEC offered detailed information about the intricacies of the deduplication and adjudication processes to the NSCE. Chaired by the Minister of Justice and co-chaired by the ECOWAS Commission Resident Representative in Liberia and the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Liberia, the NSCE serves as a crucial part of the electoral machinery, reinforcing the NEC’s commitment to delivering a fair and representative election.

As the Presidential and Legislative elections of 2023 draw closer, the National Elections Commission stands at the forefront, leading Liberia’s democratic march with utmost precision, transparency, and dedication. With these final figures officially announced, the stage is set for the Liberian populace to exercise their electoral rights and shape the future of their nation.
