Suspected Herders Kill 34 Refugees at Primary School in Benue State, Nigeria

A tragic incident has occurred in Nyiev council ward, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, as suspected herders attacked a primary school where 34 people were seeking refuge, killing all of them. The attack by the suspected herders occurred between 9 and 10 pm on Friday night, marking yet another heinous act of violence in the state. This follows the killing of 46 people at Umogidi in Otukpo LGA of the state, just two days prior.

According to Christopher Waku, the security officer of the local government, who spoke on behalf of the Chairman of the LGA, Mike Aba, the attack was nothing short of genocide. Waku, who was at the scene of the incident, reported that 24 corpses were found in the classrooms where the residents were taking refuge, while 10 corpses were found on the road, indicating that they were attempting to flee the attack when they were fatally shot.

The State Command Spokesperson, Catherine Anene, confirmed the attack but requested more time to gather further details about the situation. This tragic incident adds to the growing list of violent attacks in the region and highlights the need for urgent action to address the root causes of the conflict and ensure the safety and protection of all residents in Benue State.
