Thugs Attack Residents in Lagos, Leaving Many Injured and Shops and Vehicles Destroyed Amid Intra-Community Fight

Residents of Omonile, Abule-Ado community in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State, were left reeling after an attack by thugs that left many injured and caused extensive property damage. Pandemonium broke out yesterday as the thugs stormed the area, destroying shops and shattering windscreens of cars parked in the vicinity.

Reports suggest that the attack was a spillover of the violence that marred the governorship and state House of Assembly elections in the state on Saturday. Thugs had invaded polling units to snatch ballot boxes, leading to a confrontation with another group of thugs. The ballot box snatchers ran into houses in the area from where they escaped. The second group of thugs, in anger and frustration, destroyed the houses.

The morning after the elections, gunshots were heard from the Omonile end of Abule-Ado as armed thugs numbering over 50 invaded the community. They shot indiscriminately and destroyed all the vehicles parked on the road, accusing residents of being responsible for the previous day’s attack and for daring to chase them when they snatched the ballot boxes.

Residents were left with no choice but to defend themselves, as captured in a video that went viral on social media showing both males and females holding sticks and pestles to protect themselves. An audio recording of an unidentified man also went viral, alerting Nigerians on the invasion of the community and calling on security agents to come to the aid of residents.

Teams of policemen and military personnel were deployed to contain the situation, and normalcy has been restored. A spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that two persons have been arrested, and an investigation has commenced into the matter.

The incident highlights the dangers of election-related violence and the need for all stakeholders to work together to ensure that the electoral process is carried out in a peaceful and transparent manner. It is important for law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to prevent any form of violence or unrest that may arise from the electoral process.

In conclusion, the attack on residents of Omonile, Abule-Ado community, is a disturbing development that underscores the need for all Nigerians to promote peaceful coexistence and eschew violence in all forms. It is important for the government to take proactive measures to address the root causes of election-related violence and promote a culture of tolerance and respect for the rule of law. The people of Omonile, Abule-Ado community, are urged to remain calm and work with law enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of the attack are brought to justice.
