Lagos State Police Arrests 17 Suspects During Election

The Lagos State Police Command has announced the arrest of 17 persons, including a woman, for various offenses during the recent governorship and Houses of Assembly elections. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrests to newsmen on Sunday.

It will be recalled that the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, CP Idowu Owohunwa, had earlier stated that a list of the persons arrested would be compiled and released on Sunday. According to Hundeyin, the suspects were involved in 21 different cases, including attacks on INEC officials, vandalism, and ballot box snatching. Other offenses include possession of fake INEC ID cards, conduct likely to cause breach of peace, assault occasioning harm, and illegal possession of firearms.

All 17 suspects have been taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, for further investigation. Hundeyin revealed that those found guilty of electoral offenses would be handed over to INEC for prosecution, while those involved in other criminal offenses would be charged to court.

The Police Command’s swift action in apprehending these suspects is commendable, as it demonstrates their commitment to ensuring peaceful and credible elections in Lagos State. We urge the authorities to ensure that the suspects face the full consequences of their actions, and that justice is served for the victims of their crimes. It is only by holding individuals accountable for their actions that we can deter others from engaging in similar illegal and immoral behavior.
